Cosplayers of Color: Going Back to Kali

The Cosplayers of Color rolls on and we’re going going, back back to see a good friend of ours here on The Block, Kali Neko. If you don’t remember Ms. Neko, she was our second guest on the podcast for guess what, our cosplay show. I just KNEW we had to interview and get everybody who were not graced by her presence, we got to sit down with my favorite feline and give her a scratch behind the ears.

Bobbo:
Hey Kitty… Hakurai is my editor and will be helping me with the interview

Hakurai:
Good evening. *bows*

Kali Neko:
Hi

Bobbo:
I know you just got home take your time

Kali Neko:
It’s cool. I multitask lol

Hakurai:
*continues to eat Chantilly cake* mmhmm, take your time.

Kali Neko:
Just start. If I take any pause, I’ll still get to it.

Bobbo:
Okay, so for follow those who don’t know yet or haven’t heard our cosplay show, tell the readers about Kali??
Kali Neko:
Like, an intro to myself, or the definition of cosplay?

Bobbo:
Intro to you

Kali Neko:
I started in 2011 just as something to pass the time during my college summers. I had no sewing skill to speak of, but remembered helping out my grandmother when I were younger
From there, it took over a significant chunk of my life. It’s still a hobby, but it’s one I threw myself into.
Bobbo:
Okay, so what do you mostly like to cosplay??

Kali Neko:
Anime characters. I’m very big on that. But I’ve touched upon western characters as of late.

Bobbo:
Okay, so what attracted you to get into this hobby of yours, lol and what’s keeping you going??

Kali Neko:
As I was teaching myself to sew, a few friends suggested I use that to cosplay. I had just learned about the convention scene and always loved dressing in costume, so I decided to give it a go. At first it was hard, but I was proud of the outcome. I could look at the finished product and say “I made this on my own.” That’s why I keep going. The craftsmanship, the showmanship. I can say “I did this.” And the various skills I’ve researched and learned are helpful too. Plus, I’m getting to bring cool fantastic characters to life in a sense.

Kali Neko:
It’s all very fun.
I’ve also met lots of people. Can throw ideas and techniques back and forth.

Bobbo:
That’s awesome…

Kali Neko:
And dorky as hell the more I think about it

Bobbo:
Lmao, no it’s not

Hakurai:
#DorkyIsLife

Kali Neko:
But I’ve always been into creative arts. Arts and crafts was my thing. I like visual media

Bobbo:
Okay cool… I never knew that

Kali Neko:
I enjoy directly working with my hands.
Oh yeah, my grammar school art teacher was the best. Always encouraging and showing us how to make cool stuff.

Bobbo:
I’ve seen so many of your cosplays and they all are awesome to me but which one has been you favorite cosplay to do???

Kali Neko:
But I didn’t start sewing until I was 19.
Blair the Cat from Soul Eater hands down
I cosplay some rendition every year, be it canon or crossover, or something.
She was my second cosplay but the first I made completely from scratch.
Made LOTS of mistakes that first time and remembering that, made a better version for this past halloween. 2 years was a great improvement
Free of Soul Eater is a close second. I wasn’t expecting to have so much fun with him.
If you haven’t guessed, I REALLY like Soul Eater lol

Hakurai:
I was just about to ask that lol

Kali Neko:
I’m not sure if I’m gonna cosplay anyone else. Those two are my favorite characters.

Bobbo:
With all the negativity going around the Cosplay community, what do you have as a message for the upcoming Cosplayers of Color in the future?

Kali Neko:
Do whatever/whoever the fuck you want. It’s your time, money, and effort being spent on the character that YOU love. Same goes for gender, creed, sexuality, religious affiliation, height, weight, basically anything that falls under the non-discriminatory act and more.

Bobbo:
Awesome!!
We’ve been talking with to a lot of cosplayers and we’ve been getting the same message
So is there anything else you want to tell your fans or the people discovering you for the first time…

Kali Neko:
I’d hope so
If you ever need cosplay help or advice, or wanna hang at a con, I’m always open.

Bobbo:
Thanks Kali, so just drop your sites and fan page links to me here and I want to thank you so very much for doing this work is today

Kali Neko:
Lol it’s cool. Fanpage is http://www.facebook.com/KaliNeko and instagram is kali_neko. I have no idea what the url for that would be.
